Find your fire. A search for your why-power.
Why do you do what you do?
Whether that is in your career, school, hobbies, or daily tasks...why do you do those things? What is your purpose?
Knowing your why is one of the most powerful intrinsic motivators. It is what lights your soul on fire and gets you out of bed each morning. It’s your personal reminder to “just keep swimming” through life’s struggles and heartbreaks. This is what you remind yourself of when your workouts get challenging or when you feel like you’ve hit a dead end with your goals, because this is what is going to motivate you to keep on keepin’ on.
Although you may love what you do, you may hit a wall from time to time or you may end up on autopilot. You’re 100% going to experience challenges. With knowing your why, you’ll have the tool to keep you from hitting that dead end. Your why will add fuel to the fire that propels you forward. And when you know your why, the how will come easier.
One tool I have found useful to uncover your deeply rooted why is the “never ending why” activity. It helps you dig deep into your purpose by simply answering the question, “why?”
Grab a piece of paper. I’ll wait.
Start with self-reflection and ask yourself why you are on the path you currently are on, or why you want to achieve that big, hairy, audacious goal you have. Write that down! Now, looking at that why statement, ask yourself why that is your why. Now write THAT down. Continue this process until you have 7 ‘why’ statements written down. There are no wrong answers. The last statement is your true why. It’s the fire that drives you further.
Place it where you face it! Keep your paper with your why statements in a place that you can see it. Somewhere that you know you’ll see it so that you can be reminded each day why you do what you do.
Reminders about your why:
● It is as unique and special as you are
● It can and will change as you grow, so revisit it often
● It helps you overcome your fears and become more resilient
● It fosters focus and drive
● Finding your why can take time. Give yourself grace as you navigate that space
Now get out there and do things ON purpose WITH purpose.
